The report of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada documented the brutal treatment of Indigenous children in residential schools. Canadian society continues to perpetuate the colonialism and racism that was inherent in the settlement of Canada and in the residential school system. Reconciliation requires us to commit ourselves on a national, regional and local level to developing respectful, responsible relationships with Indigenous peoples.

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was officially endorsed by Canada in 2010. In 2018 Romeo Saganash introduced a bill to implement UNDRIP and the bill passed. Meanwhile the recent Supreme Court Mikisew decision limits the duty to consult on the development of new legislation. The Declaration outlines the rights necessary to ensure the survival, dignity and well-being of Indigenous peoples of the world including the right to free, prior and informed consent in matters concerning Indigenous traditional territories.
